  • Summary: Visit theARCHIVE to hear a discussion. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum: Stephen Sondheim’s third Broadway show, and the first for which he wrote both music and lyrics, with book by Larry Gelbart and Burt Shevelove, forms the central plank of the summer season at the National. Edward Hall – son of Sir Peter – directs this raunchy, knockabout musical farce, derived from Plautus, in which the wily slave Pseudolus (Desmond Barrit) struggles to contend with the multiple confusions.
